Ses romans ont inspiré de nombreux films dont Mystic River (2003) de Clint Eastwood, avec Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn et Tim Robbins, Gone Baby Gone (2007) de Ben Affleck, avec son frère Casey Affleck dans le rôle du personnage principal, et Shutter Island (2010) de Martin Scorsese, avec Leonardo DiCaprio.
